- Award Recognizes People Who Have Made a Significant Contribution
to the Sport of Scuba Diving -
San Diego, CA – (April 5, 2006) – Continuing the tradition of recognizing those individuals who have changed the face of scuba diving, DEMA is now accepting nominations for the 2006 Reaching Out Awards (ROA). The deadline to submit a nomination is May 1, 2006. The 2006 ROA recipients will be announced in late summer 2006 with the Award presented at the DEMA Awards Party on November 10, 2006, during DEMA Show 2006 in Orlando, Florida.
First presented in 1989, the ROA recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the diving community by aiding in the development, promotion, and/or safety of the sport and "reaching out" to bring diving to people throughout the world. While the ways in which past ROA recipients have contributed may vary from photography, training, equipment design and water safety to publishing, travel, retailing, exploration and science, all have been pioneers, improving the sport for everyone and helping to make diving what it is today.
More than just recognition of these individual achievements, the ROA has become the diving industry’s Hall of Fame. To become a member of DEMA’s Hall of Fame is an extraordinary achievement available only to those who truly deserve to be praised for their outstanding efforts and contribution to the sport of scuba diving. Past recipients of the ROA include Stan Waterman (1989), John Cronin (1991), Eugenie Clark (1993), Paul Tzimoulis (1997), Captain Don Stewart (1998), James Cahill (2001), Jean Gallagher (2003) and most recently, Nick Icorn and Neal Watson (2005).
