OK! Now everywhere I have dived I always seem to come across at least one or two Pro's that smoke.............. "Ah that first cig after a dive is better than the one after sex!" I get to hear every time............. (personaly I prefer the one after sex BUT thats a different story) So lets hear from you guys..........

;D ;D Quit 4 years ago in March, I had smoked for 33 years (yeh, Started when I was about 13, stupidest thing I ever did)( ALMOST) Hardest thing I ever did was to quit!! I was 46, overweight, and had a hard enough time getting through the swimming ( stamina ) part of the DM and Instructor sessions the way it was. I can only imagine what it would have been like if I was still smoking. I don't miss it, have saved ALOT of money, feel cleaner and healthier, and have used the money for more equipment/ training. IT'S ALL GOOD

pretty honest, its realy hard 2 find none smoker than smoker in the buisness, almost all of the pros I met r smoker- incl. myself :-( ... certainly not the best advertise 4 our sport and profesion, and almost all of them I asked r trying 2stop- result: 99% r unseccusful !!! I work on it...

I would say I'm trying to quit...but it's hard with all the drinking on island. I smoked for 2 yrs...quit for 12...then started up again after divorce proceedings.
THEN...quit for 4 months until I got tossed out of my last apartment....
So far about 2/3 of the dive pros I know smoke. Supposedly better on air consumption....altho I don't know.
I wanna quit...the current boy toy doesn't approve ;D

I gave up in 1984, had smoked for15 years, just stopped. At the DC where I work 3 out of 4 instructors do not smoke, the one who does seems to have the better air consumption though?? Strange that! In an ideal world nobody would smoke, but it's far from ideal, isn't it?

well, i smoke - and no, i dont try to quit! sure its an addiction, as drinking, putting too much salt on your food or being a massmurderer. i have to say i usually dont do at work (on a divejob that is) and if smoking is accepted (be surprised - in many dc's it is) it depends on my clients/students. if they smoke, i have a cigarette with them - why not? most shops i know dont allow smoking on the boats anyway - no prob. i can also just dont smoke for 8 or 10 hrs (or however long the day is - amazingly no prob). i do not and dont accept any member of staff to use the smoking as an excuse to get away from doing their job. if it is that big a prob - you find another job, where you can get away with it. but in the idle times, when the work is done - go ahead. if there is a non smoking policy at the shop, go somewhere where nobody is disturbed/offended. just make sure youre available when there is work to be done. the whole thematic is a bit blown out of proportion, due to (as usual) the usa, there sometimes warped and mysterious ways of creating laws (one just think about prohibition). sure common biz sense and courtesy to your clients play into it also.

Still am a smoker, but have a bet that I'll quit in February.
I've seen a lot of smokers with a better air consumption, maybe because we are used to getting less oxygen from inhaling?? However, I totally support the idea that once one starts (teaching) tech-diving, you should quit. Too much stress on your body, risk of dcs increases drastically. Any thoughts on this?

I'm getting on in my years, (NO Im not gonna say how old) have been in diving for over 25 yrs 15 of them as a Commie, have smoked since I was 16 yrs old and still smoke........ Sure I'd like to quit, but what the heck everybody dies from something some day............ AND you know what they say? " Smoked meat NEVER rots!" so I guess I'll light up another nail in my coffin and read the rest of the forum.................. ;D
