here something i came across surfing (the net not the ocean). the concept sounds promising, but it seems to be a problem to get into contact with anybody behind the site anyway its worth a look, let me know if you know more about it! iudp.org/ The International Union of Diving Professionals Statement of Intent. The International Union of Diving Professionals (IUDP) was created with the goal of providing professional divers a means to influence the development of the employment conditions within the recreational and technical scuba diving industry. The means by which the union will try and influence the industry will vary in detail from one situation to another but will have the principle of communal support as the foundation. Over time it is the intention of the union to try and build professional relationships with others in the industry where these relationships may ultimately improve the employment conditions for the professional diver.

Unions in general require some form of government regulation or affiliation, and affiliation with the organisations in which the union is involved, otherwise their involvment is marginal at best. Is this what is best for the dive industry?
In an industry which is built primarily on member based associations, PADI NAUI et al, unions 'should' not offer any benefits. The bases of these associations is to offer members something and to work with members to build and grow the organisation/association, just as unions offer employees/employers. This falls back to members, dm's instructors etc etc using their respective association to build and or better their jobs etc. Complain to your association about poor conditions, bad dive centers etc and they will eventually have to do something about it, or die.
Just my 2c worth
