Hi, I got an offer to become ICD-Instructor in Phuket, Thailand (International Chamber of Divers) for paying around 1000 Eur and getting a little money back for each week working there (I am a PADI DM, did it 2002 in Indonesia for 6 weeks but hadn't had a chance to work any other sites due to a nose operation in 2003 - so I'm a "newbie"). A crossover to PADI would cost around 150 Eur there. Prob is, that neither PADI Europe nor any instructors I asked have ever heard of this organisation (supposently they are in Egypt and Thailand) so help/infos would be greatly appreciated. My original intention is to work as a DM to get prepared to and finance my IDC/IE on agreeable terms and conditions. I got about 4 months + of time in 2005 , prob from April on. Any tips would be of great help. Tks in advance, dolphin

I would be careful spending any time and money becoming an instructor for a new and unknown organization. Think about it, you will limit yourself when it comes to employment opportunities. The larger diveshops where you can make a career in the diving industry are affiliated with the well known organizations like PADI. I myself have worked and made an ok living in the diveindustry for over 15 years, this would not have been possible if I would have chosen for a small unknown organisation. My advise to you is to take a PADI IDC (or any other well known organization) pay for it yourself, that way you are free and don't owe any diveshop owner anything.

hi, i never heard of them either, but one prob in the diving industry lately is, that everybody starts his own little certification agency. what not means that the programs have to be bad, especially in the more and more growing tec sector. but the question you should ask yourself ( at least i would ) why you got to do this mysterious agencies course first and then cross over to padi for another €150. so you talking a total of €1150 or nearly U$ 1500! you can get your padi or ssi or any other instructor for that money everywhere, without worry if they will follow up with the crossover and then you sit there with some strange cert. nobody ever heard of. and there is not even a major saving involved. also check on diverelated sites, there are a lot of offers for courses against work.

Dolphin, Well, I'm afraid I'm with the other 2. All their points are valid. Also PADI controls about 80% of the world market, that is a lot of doors straight up. Your training will always be up to standard or above and you have an un-matched level of support. I can say that because I have had it from day 1. The other thing is as you advnce through the PADI system other instructor quals from other agencies can create problems with your career advancment, there have been instances where instructors have found difficulty getting positions on courses/rankings due to conflicting loyalties. PADI rewards loyalty. Another point to consider. Sorry but I would have to say go with the market leader, it opens more doors and carries more weight.
Good Luck, Gregs.

I have to agree on the point that you should pay for your IDC/IE yourself sothat you are not then going to restrict yourself by haveing to work for a single diveshop.

sorry buddy,
i have to agree to all the other posts. Go out, get experience as a dive master, and pay for you IDC.
If you want to find a job, be a PADI instructor, and get crossovers later. Good luck ...

I have to agree with everyone on this topic. Go with an association that is known. Pay for it yourself so that you don't owe any favors. I do have one question though, Is this a PADI only site? It seems as though a lot of you think that PADI hung the moon......you might want to go out and smell the roses.

Never heard of ICD at all my friend. Personally if your really wanting to be a good instructor and get work around this great water world we live on, then stick to the well established agency’s ( why spend money and risk no return). As for your instructors course, look up a great guy called Tony fonts, one of the most professional CD I have had the pleasure of learning from. His based in Airley beach in north Queensland Australia. I went all the way from the UK to do my IDC with him so the cost is worth it. Also good chance of getting work after (if you have a work visa) you’ll find it’s doing mostly DSD which in “my eyes” is the hardest course to teach, you’ll find out why…<br> Anyway good luck and happy diving, also must say what a good idea this site is maybe one day will get a good union started to stop the bad rate of pay some instructors get for basically looking after the most important thing people have, our lives! ps oh the reason I went to oz, was it was winter in England so far too cold, but still great CDC here also. I should know I work for one.

like viking i did my idc with Tony, what i really would recommend you, he is great, gives you the right attitude, and i think he and his wife each must have tought more than 1500 instructors. There you are in good hands, and i am still thankfull for this experience.

i have to agree to all the other posts. Go out, get experience as a dive master, and pay for you IDC. A good address is Matthias Breit, located in Hurgadha Egypt. I did my IDC/IE directed by him. He is just incredibel and tells you right away where you should improve quickly to succeed! If you want his email, write me!

Hi there, I agree with all the others- The best way find a good CD, make your IDC pay for it and than work to get the invested money back. I would stay away from all the free offers like work for your IDC and so, most likely you spend more money this way , because after the IDC they want that you ork for free until everything is paid, and they tell you when you can go. If you need infos about the IDC here in Centralamerica, contact me.
