Just came back from a two week vacation from Mabul / Malaysia. Diving down there is just amazing. They have everything from big fish to macro. I saw more in two weeks diving there than in a year as instructor on the Maledives. Also the corals are as good as in the red sea... I was just amazed!!!!
I stayed on the Island of Mabul. In the morning you go to the nearby island Sipadan, do two dives and return for lunch. In the afternoon you do one dive in Mabul (macro paradies). If you like you can do a nightdive as fourth dive in the evening (which I have to recommend - this has to be a must!!)
They also offer cave and cavern diving. On Sipadan island is this famous turtle cave. Saw a few years ago a report about it on tv and it is known for the turtle skeletons in it. I did that too (my first cavern experience) and again - awesome!!
Macro - would take hours to tell you all the species I saw. I'm a great nudi branche fan and I nearly got sick of them. Pipefishes in all kinds, seahorse, frogsfishes (all kind of colours and sizes), crocodile fish, all kinds of crabs (from harlekin to orang utan crab), Mandarin fish and so on!!!
Big fish - all dives in Sipadan where with at least 20 turtles each dive and about 5 to 10 whit tip reefsharks. On each dive!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then we had a treasure shark, leopard shark, hammerhead (visability was pure, so we didn't see him well), small manta, baracudas (once a huge school of about 350-400 just an armlenght away...), and so on!!!
Dive center was not as good as the diving, still ok but the equipement was pure. I once needed some tools to fix my first stage (just small, easy repair) and asked them for some. Was very surprised to find out, that they barly had tools available. So a big minus for that.
Staff was extremly nice and our dive guide was perfect. He saw things... just amazing (I'm not bad in finding macro, but this guy is numinous).
So go down there and enjoy diving!!!!!
