Seven-month focus on Diving Emergency Specialist program designed to make better, safer divers
(DNW) -- The DES QUEST, launched earlier this month by Divers Alert Network, represents a bold step forward in diver training and education. Designed to provide divers with encouragement and reasons to continue their education, DES QUEST supports DAN’s Diving Emergency Specialist (DES) recognition program, the first program of its type to offer credit for knowledge regardless of the agency through which the credential was earned. Participants can earn the Diving Emergency Specialist recognition by participating in the DES Quest, an incentive program running from June 1 through December 31, 2006.
According to Jeff Myers, DAN Vice President of Training, “Our goal is safety and education. DES QUEST is designed to encourage good divers to become better divers by recognizing those divers who seek to go beyond advanced or specialty levels and focus their continuing education on dive safety training. We’re interested in the knowledge, not necessarily what program it has been obtained through.”
Myers said that while the Diving Emergency Specialist program is not new, the DES QUEST and its seven-month emphasis on DES certifications will generate safer and more educated divers, reinforcing a major part of DAN’s mission.
The DES certification is open to any diver. Requirements to complete the program include:
· Be a rescue level (or higher) diver with their training agency
· Hold a current CPR and First Aid certification
· Hold a current certification in Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries
· (or equivalent)
The participant must also complete three of the following:
· Advanced Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries (or equiv.)
· First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries (or equiv.)
· AEDs for Scuba Diving (or equiv.)
· On-Site Neurological Assessment for Divers (or equiv.)
· Remote Emergency Medical Oxygen (REMO2™)
Participants completing the program between June1 and December 31, 2006 will receive a specially designed t-shirt and baseball cap prize package, along with automatic entry in a drawing for a $250 DAN gift certificate.
Dive instructors and professionals offering the DES QUEST program are also eligible to receive special recognition. For more details on this, visit the Professional Members section of the DAN Website at diversalertnetwork.org/training/instructors/apro.asp
