Hey Guys, from a trip to Hurghada I have some great Ideas! I accepted since a long time that A Instrucor Union does not make a bir sense and I there was one -due to different local law it would be impossible to make it global that the Instructors in the Resorts (what I am) could also gain from it. Anyway before you apply somewhere you check the board. There mor members the more information! So here is da thang: A Businesscard! Free to download/send/print give away in the door of an finishing IE etc... You work in a big center or just visit it? Fine! So hand out some DiveProInfo Cards to the staff. (Especially in Dominikan Republic this has an effect ) The Problem: I am not so good Design Programs and stuff. Anybody else thinks this is a good Idea and you are good in creating a V-Card? Go ahead and lets start a poll after there is some designs available. Another point toimprove the core of the board would be another thing. What I find strange is, that we have 670 members which were or are working for a center but we have very few information (way no 670) divecenters in the good/bad section. So let´s get it on!

As laid out it will be impossible to create a union every Instructor worldwide can gain from. The other Possibility is to make the Good/Bad DC so Public that EVERYBODY knows about it. In the end DC Managments have to review their practics because they gonna have a hard time to have people willing to work for them.

Hey berniediver if you start off with the attitude its impossible to do something.....It will remain impossible. The largest journey started with the first step. As I have said I am, at the moment, still trying to get this association up and running in Europe. That will do for a starters..... BUT if everybody has the feeling OH THATS IMPOSSIBLE!!!! Nothing will ever happen !!

Thats what I am meaning Argo. If you get it done for Europe (which is quite big for the beginning) you will have another lot of DC dying because on top of high energy costs and difficultys with seasonal business only and local safety laws and and and now they have high costs on staff too. Though the Staff in europe are mainly students and rarely full working Pros (sorry to hit some pros around). If you do it as a side job or a student job. You obviously do not need a Union. If you do it as your profession you do it somewhere where you can work all year. And these countries do not provide and opportunities for unions anyway.

...you will have another lot of DC dying because on top of high energy costs and difficultys with seasonal business only and local safety laws and and and now they have high costs on staff too... And thats a bad thing? - Excuse me while I cry in my beer Any business which is relies on expliotation of staff / subsistance wages ought not to be in business. The playing field would be level for all the businesses in the locale anyway. It may prevent instructors as being perceived as 'disposable'. There are many dive centres who "know the cost of everything but the value of nothing". I always include references when applying for jobs, it amazes me how infrequently the DC's actually bother to check them, but with a throwaway mentality getting another instructor is as easy as getting a ballpoint pen so why should they waste their time. Once staff wages reach a point where the instructors can afford food, rent, bills, equipment, professional fees and insurance, pension & medical and even professional development, the DC's might take a little more care over who they employ and consequently treat the staff a little more fairly... Call me Naive, Call me Crazy, but Call me! Deepthought (May all your Ups and Downs be slower than 18 meters/minute)
