I spent my Christmas in La Paz, Mexico diving for four days. This area of the Baja Peninsula is well know for large pelagics and this (besides our subsequent days in Cabo) were the reason for this trip.
We dove with the Cortez Club and had a really good time. The water here is more green than blue and the visibility while we were diving was not what i would describe as great. Trips between dive sites were perfect surface intervals with about an hour needed to travel from one site to another.
Highlight: We snorkeled with whale sharks of different sizes every single day. Cortez Club offered giving up a tank dive (we had three per day) for whale shark snorkeling and we took full advantage of the opportunity.
The whale sharks here are....well.... plentiful. Young, teens, and adults are easily spotted and surprisingly in relatively shallow water. My girlfriend was standing in 4 feet of water next to a baby. They are completely awesome. Well worth the tank(s).
While we didn't see the Mantas, Hammerheads, or Grey Whales that we would have liked too, the diving was good on the wrecks and with the seals.
I would recommend Cortez Club and La Paz to anyone. It was a relatively inexpensive trip until we arrived in Cabo and the staff at Cortez Club was fantastic. Hola Cleo!
