Re: min pay / max pay « Result #1 on Nov 15, 2009, 2:13pm »
we write nov. 2009 now and i just like to update this issue! i just came back from a semi-comprehensive diving trip. what i encountered was instructors working for U$ 100 and even less, DM's working for free, etc.! it leaves you with the question "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU GUYS??????? you paid dearly to get to the point you are so far with your certification agency. and now you work for $100 a week??
well, generally i would say - you deserve it!!!!! just because you take the deal.
On October 24, 2009 a 350 minutes dive (05 hours 50 minutes!) will be conducted by the team of the Four Seasons Kuda Huraa dive centre to raise awareness about our changing climate. The dive will start around 10:00 and will end at 16:00. During that time, the dive team will build an artificial reef shaped like the three numbers: 3, 5 and 0 and transplant living coral on it. We will use a range of SCUBA equipment to complete the dive. The open circuit divers will use around 11500 liters of breathing gas called Nitrox 32 and 36, that's 6 dive tanks each! Other divers will use a closed circuit rebreather unit (the IS Megalodon) which allows divers to stay down for more than 6 hours. Other divers will assist us by bringing down diving equipment, full tanks as well as food, drinks and entertainment! This will probably be the longest dive ever conducted in the Maldives! The main dangers are cold and fatigue as well as oxygen toxicity for the rebreather diver. More info, pictures and videos will follow to show you the preparation and the actual event. Wish us luck! Ben Capitaine & Four Seasons Kuda Huraa Dive Team!
UPDATE! Friday 16/10 8 Divers spent 3 hours and 30 minutes underwater to build the "350" reef with 24 coral trays (rebars covered with resin and sand) and rubbles. Everything went well; the divers were in good shape after such a long time spent underwater. Each number is over 3m long and 1.5m wide, the location is a sandy slope 8-9m deep protected from sedimentation. We used 3 tanks each for this preparation dive, and during the last hour our support divers brought us some water and bananas to restore some energy. We are now preparing Saturday's dive where we will spend most of the 5h50 attaching living coral to the trays and with some luck we will have a lasting symbol of this Action Day.

Sounds like another of those " Get em on the boat, get em in the water, get em back out and get their money operations" to me. Everybody knows that this was going to happen sooner or later as safety never did play a BIG part in the Maldives........ Money makes the world go round.......I just hope that the local dive centers owned by Europeans learn from this and take the necessary actions to stop similar stupid deaths like this one, from happening again......... I'm certainly not putting all the resort owners in one pot but the majority do not pay enough attention to the training of the local help ( MFA / EFR / O2 etc etc etc)

NZ diver in Maldives poisonings says death was 'waste' Friday, 06 June 2008 Email a Friend | Printable View | Have Your Say Related Links • Subscribe to Archivestuff • Have your say
New Zealand divemaster Lee Findlay says the death of a Russian tourist killed in the Maldives last month by carbon monoxide pumped into his air bottle was a "needless waste". Mr Findlay, of Remuera, and his wife Niv were tourists on a commercial diving trip with Russian Roman Rudakov, 41, and both unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate him. The Russian was an "extremely nice guy" who had a wife and two small children, Mr Findlay told a specialist website for divers, scubaboard.com. "If anything good at all can come from this, hopefully the Maldivian government will tighten up health and safety regulations for all dive operators." One of the compressors used to fill air tanks had incorrectly been fitted with a cheap filter which did not extract carbon monoxide from the air it was pumping: "Apparently this practice is widespread in the Maldives," he said. Most of the tanks used by the party contained the exhaust gas at the level of 80 parts per million (ppm). The maximum safe level for diving is 15ppm, and Mr Rudakov's tank had at least 10 times that level, according to local police. Survivors of the May 28 poisoning included tourists from New Zealand, the Netherlands, and Germany visiting the Maldives' palm-fringed coral islands 800km off the toe of India. Maldives police have arrested a 21-year-old man, who was responsible for filling the divers' air tanks, on suspicion of negligence, a local news website, minivannews.com, reported today A German victim, Raymond Kober, told the website that the company which ran their trip, Touring Maldives - controlled by Austrian Gundi Holm - should be held responsible. Mr Findlay said there were signs of poor maintenance and inadequate training of staff in addition to a cheap filter being used. A total of 16 divers, including two guides, were on the trip, but two people - including Mrs Findlay - stayed out of the water because they had been experiencing headaches after diving. Ten divers on the boat Baani Adventurer received bad air, and another four had clean air in tanks filled from a second compressor. Mr Findlay said Mr Rudakov appeared to have been made unconscious by the bad air about the time he surfaced, and to have floated face-down in the water and drowned. "The crew did not appear to know what to do so my wife started CPR and several of them simply stood around and watched," Mr Findlay said. "His lungs were full of water". Mr Findlay said his diving partner experienced problems and was only semi-conscious when she surfaced. When he got back on the boat, Mr Findlay took over CPR on the Russian, and his wife took an oxygen bottle to help other affected divers, including the two guides, who were very ill. The oxygen bottle did not work. - NZPA

Toxic boss? « Result #17 on Apr 21, 2008, 6:10am »
You will find this behavior among coworkers, bosses and managers no matter witch branch , this attitude is some times what employer is looking for, to day it seems to be a way to success and to many people seems to copy this kind of behavior. Do some research on Google a bout personality disorders and you will find more.
A mnemonic that can be used to remember the criteria for antisocial personality disorder, ordinarily considered to be the umbrella term that includes psychopaths, is "CORRUPT": C - cannot follow law O - obligations ignored R – remorselessness R – recklessness U – underhandedness P - planning deficit and T – temper. http://www.management-issues.com/2007/4/23/opinion/psychopaths-sycophants.asp

Projection Bullies project their inadequacies, shortcomings, behaviours etc. on to other people to avoid facing up to their inadequacy and doing something about it (learning about oneself can be painful), and to distract and divert attention away from themselves and their inadequacies. http://groups.msn.com/NARCISSISTICPERSON....mpseofhell.msnw

A psychopath is also a grandiose individual, has a very powerful sense of self, believes that he or she is the centre of the universe, better, smarter than everybody else. Corporations I suppose almost by their very nature would have to adopt this particular attitude. If they took the stance that they were in fact inferior to every other company they’d probably not going to get very far. So I imagine that they would spend an awful lot of time explaining to others and to themselves that we’re number one, we’re the best. The psychopath is also very manipulative. Tends to manipulate, con and deceive other people, to try and mold them into something that they can use. http://www.thecorporation.com/media/Hare.pdf
Hare's psychopathy checklist is as follows: Glib and superficial charm; Grandiose sense of self-worth; Need for stimulation; Pathological lying; Conning and manipulativeness; Lack of remorse or guilt; Shallow affect; Callousness and lack of empathy; Parasitic lifestyle; Poor behavioral controls; Promiscuous sexual behavior; Early behavior problems; Lack of realistic, long-term goals; Impulsivity; Irresponsibility; Failure to accept responsibility for own actions; Many short-term marital relationships; Juvenile delinquency; Revocation of conditional release; Criminal versatility.
Studies indicate that bullies are actually inept people who are not talented, maybe have a rage against themselves that they express outward toward people they see as being better than they are. It’s from a point of weakness that they express their violence toward others” They like to hurt, frighten, tyrannize. They do it for a sense of power and control, and will often only drop subtle hints about what they are up to. At the same time they polish their aggressive, domineering manner in such a way to disguise any intimidation as legitimate corporate behavior. Such pathological personalities always seek out positions of power, such as teacher, bureaucrat, manager, or police officer. You can also distinguish several subtypes. One not very convincing subtyping was developed by the Workplace Bullying & Trauma Institute. It includes for subtypes: • The constant critic who uses put downs, insults, name-calling, and makes aggressive eye contact. • The two-headed snake who pretends to be nice while sabotaging you. • The gatekeeper is also known as the micromanager and control freak • Screaming Mimi is emotionally out of control and explosive. http://www.softpanorama.org/Social/Toxic_managers/bullies.shtml

How to BullyProof Yourself Shifting the Balance of Power "You should..." "Why do you always..." "Wouldn't it be better if we..." "I can't believe you would..." "I thought we were going to..." "You need to..." "Did you forget?" "How could you..." "Why don't you..." "Next time you should..." "Did you hear me?" "Don't you think you (we) should..." "I thought we agreed..." are examples of an abuser's move to a dominant controller's role. It's a verbal attack move. You're being maneuvered into a servant's role to meet his expectations. You start to walk on eggshells. Strategy - Watch out for his little 'helpful suggestions'. Be aware of words that make you feel you want to defend yourself. http://groups.msn.com/PSYCHOPATH/subtleverbalabuse.msnw

Baltimore Aquarium « Result #18 on Apr 6, 2008, 7:21pm »
Well yesterday I led a group of my students down to the Baltimore Aquarium for some diving. We got to dive their 2 main tanks. Our first dive was in their Coral Reef Tank. Followed by a trip into the Wings Tank with the Rays, Tarpon, Sharks and Turtle. The Reef tank featured your standard stock of Carribean fish such as Groupers, Angles, Parrots and all. A great time was had by all.

min pay / max pay « Result #20 on Mar 1, 2008, 6:02am »
some thoughts based on events in germany for you. a "handful" of mailman (yep the guys that bring your snailmail) gets a minimum salary deal at nearly 10 (yes TEN) euro an hour minimum pay. cool isn't it? works out to about $600 a week, $2400 a month for a "no brain" employment. WHY? combination of a strong union / and a former monopoly service (the german Bundespost) to keep the monopoly (by pushing lowpay pricks out) and make the "paperboy" happy (and therefore his union).
so what should you learn from it (call it distill out of all the crap)?
how is it with:
yes some ppl (even complete morons) make money as owners of dc's. cert agencies do well the bigger they are, the better they do.
they still raise your membership fees every year. hey, you cough it up, so why not - let's try to find the NOMORE point
comes somehow to the union issue again... in a way.... yep i know, its all different and "not possible" blablablubbersprotzoggle.
well, it isn't - because you f*cking w*nkers work for sh*t and sometimes even free!!!!
you ever think about it, what would be happen if you would really aproach your job with realistic economic goals - like ... i wanna sit in the sun, don't work too much, make decent money, be able to afford a car and a house..... well - know what - i do! i work about half the hours of my old instructor job, do (kind of) f**k all..., sit in the sun, have (and can afford) 1st world fun and gadgets. how?? i got my d**ned butt out of fulltime slave labour!
i still dive every week for fun, i teach courses (i like) every month making more money .
sometimes i miss my fulltime beachbum thing, thinking about my still fulltime beach, easy - well paid job, and suddenly 50% of the course fee freelance job .....
Why work 80hrs + a week for $250, If you can work 35hrs for $500
LUNAR ECLIPSE: On Wednesday night, February 20th, the full Moon will turn a delightful shade of red and possibly turquoise, too. It's a total lunar eclipsethe last one until Dec. 2010. Sky watchers in Europe, the Americas, parts of the Middle East and Africa are favored for good views of the two-hour event. Visit http://spaceweather.com for full coverage including maps and timetables, live webcasts and discussion.
SPY SATELLITE UPDATE: The US Navy's first attempt to hit malfunctioning spy satellite USA 193 with a missile could come on Wednesday night during the lunar eclipse. This is based on an air traffic advisory warning pilots to steer clear of a patch of Pacific Ocean near Hawaii just when USA 193 is due to pass overhead. Until the satellite is shot down, it remains visible to casual sky watchers during evening passes over US and Canadian towns and cities; experienced observers say the decaying satellite is sometimes as bright as the stars of Orion, making it an easy target for unaided eyes and off-the-shelf digital cameras. Details, photos and more information are available at http://spaceweather.com. S ubscribers to Spaceweather PHONE (http://spaceweatherphone.com) will receive email and telephone alerts when the spy-sat is about to appear over their backyards.

IDIOTS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: I live in a semi-rural area. We recently had a new neighbor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the Deer Crossing sign on our road. The reason: "too many deer were being hit by cars" and he didn't want them to cross there anymore.

IDIOTS IN FOOD SERVICE: My daughter went to a local Taco Bell and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the counter for "minimal lettuce." He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg.

IDIOT SIGHTING: I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, "Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?" To which I replied, "If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?" He smiled knowingly and nodded, "That's why we ask."
______________________________________
IDIOT SIGHTING: The stoplight on the corner buzzes when it's safe to cross the street. I was crossing with an intellectually challenged coworker of mine when she asked if I knew what the buzzer was for. I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red. Appalled, she responded, "What on earth are blind people doing driving?!"
_______________________________________
IDIOT SIGHTING: At a good-bye luncheon for an old and dear coworker who was leaving the company due to "downsizing," our manager commented cheerfully, "this is fun. We should do this more often." Not a word was spoken. We all just looked at each other with that deer-in-the-headlights stare.

IDIOT SIGHTING: I work with an individual who plugged her power strip back into itself and for the life of her couldn't understand why her system would not turn on.

IDIOT SIGHTING: When my husband and I arrived at an automobile dealership to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver's side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. "Hey," I announced to the technician, "it's open!"
To which he replied, "I know - I already got that side."

After a 13.6 year absence, Comet 8P/Tuttle is once again traveling through the inner solar system. On Jan. 1 and 2, 2008, it makes its closest approach to Earth--only 24 million miles away. The emerald-colored comet will brighten to a predicted magnitude of 5.8, visible to the unaided eye from dark-sky sites and a fine target for backyard telescopes anywhere.
Two nights before closest approach, on Dec. 30th and 31st, something extraordinary will happen: Comet 8P/Tuttle has a beautiful close encounter with spiral galaxy M33. The comet and the galaxy may even overlap! This is a can't-miss opportunity for astrophotographers around the world.

I found a really nice sophisticated review engine where you can review and rate dive shops, liveaboards and dive sites. URL: http://www.reviewadivecenter.com
They've just started so not every shop is on it, but the rating system looks very nice and you can submit shops and liveaboards. Oh, you can also report a review as misleading

while we can see the point of you being here and posting - please start to go to the new site please (you can vent your dislike - or hopefully like there). here we will shut slowly but surely down. so www.divepro-info.com is the new place to go. while it might seem confusing (or different LOL) at first - i am sure you will figure it out fast and see the advantages of the new website! while we are open for suggestions, tips and requests - there is no real going back. we started here, now we progress to a new stage - which will give you many more options and advantages in the long run. as we saw over the last couple days (3 or 4) the site is up, there seems to be some confusion where to find some stuff. we will annoy you with another mass email on monday / tuesday and clear up the most common problems we received mails about in a one week period! til then, please feel free to contact us with problems at webmaster@divepro-info.com !!!

Any business which is relies on expliotation of staff / subsistance wages ought not to be in business.
The playing field would be level for all the businesses in the locale anyway.
It may prevent instructors as being perceived as 'disposable'. There are many dive centres who "know the cost of everything but the value of nothing".
I always include references when applying for jobs, it amazes me how infrequently the DC's actually bother to check them, but with a throwaway mentality getting another instructor is as easy as getting a ballpoint pen so why should they waste their time.
Once staff wages reach a point where the instructors can afford food, rent, bills, equipment, professional fees and insurance, pension & medical and even professional development, the DC's might take a little more care over who they employ and consequently treat the staff a little more fairly...
